Mobility refers to shifting physical and social locations. In a drawing, marks on paper evidence the minute movements of the hand as well as the wandering thoughts of the draftsperson. Quite often an itinerant activity, this process also lends itself to recording the personal experience of navigating a new place and new community. Inspired by the process of drawing and the personal circumstances of multiple relocations between work and living spaces, this exhibition explores the state of being on the move.
The individual squares in Roundtrip, originally organized from discarded studio material, can be continually repositioned and reassembled. The overall arrangement references a constantly shifting cityscape. With Wait/Weight, the unseen process of creating the work relates to bodily movement, while the composition has a celestial quality. The drawing evidences the accumulated action of mark making within a prescribed physical limit that corresponds to my arms reach. In the series of smaller works on paper I further explore the theme of mobility through related imagery. Collaged from the prints and drawings collected from the past two years, these works intimately navigate new spaces and novel communities. Throughout the exhibition, a state of movement relates the personal with a broader experience through condensing micro and macroscopic representations.
